Carl Sagan’s groundbreaking 13-part series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage is getting a sequel with the venerable astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson at the helm.

That is truly awesome news—and Neil deGrasse Tyson is the perfect person to take over for Sagan. So who do we have to thank for all this?

Seth MacFarlane. Yeah, Family Guy Seth MacFarlane. He will be a producer on the new series along with Sagan’s widow Ann Druyan and his colleague Steven Soter.

From GeekDad:

The producers of the show say the new series will tell “the story of how human beings began to comprehend the laws of nature and find our place in space and time.” They go on to boast: “It will take viewers to other worlds and travel across the universe for a vision of the cosmos on the grandest scale. The most profound scientific concepts will be presented with stunning clarity, uniting skepticism and wonder, and weaving rigorous science with the emotional and spiritual into a transcendent experience.

However, there could be an immediate problem stemming from MacFarlane’s involvement (depending on how you look at it). It’s likely that the new Cosmos will air Fox during primetime. Obviously, a lot more people can see it this way, but the downside is that we are talking about Fox here.

Still, keep your fingers crossed for a worthy sequel when it airs sometime in 2013.
