Evesham Technology has taken the fairly ugly stand for large televisions and made it functional by adding nine speakers to it. That is four front speakers, two rear speakers, two center speakers and a subwoofer. However, these speakers are not endowed with a ton of power- the subwoofer at 50 watts, center at 20 watts and the front and rear at 30 watts. The stand comes completely prewired and includes a sound processing unit and amplifier.
I would make the following observations about this system – first, most of the sound from a surround sound track uses the center channel, so why did they give that channel the least power? That doesn’t make much sense. I would also say that it is a simulated surround sound since all of the speakers are in the front. While that can be decent in certain rooms, it does not lend itself to being a solution for everyone and every room.
On the positive side, if you are going to have a large stand to hold your TV, you might as well use it for something useful like sound. And while it is not true surround sound, it is a whole lot better than having no system at all. The piano black finish is attractive, but not meant for every room’s decor. Plus, not needing to run wires (or even see them) is a definite plus.
I would hope if they get decent sales from this, Evesham will branch out to some better powered systems and different finishes to choose from. Selling for only $600, it is not much more expensive than most stands that offer you nothing more than shelf space.
