Hear J.R.R. Tolkien Read His Poem Namárië In Elvish [Audio]

As a linguist, Tolkien intended for the Elvish language of Quenya to be both written and spoken. He also had a very specific idea of how it would sound and now we can hear that firsthand in this 1952 recording of Tolkien reading the poem Namárië or Galadriel’s Lament.

The poem is so melodic that it has even been set to music. Composer Donald Swann created his own interpretation of the piece after listening to Tolkien sing it to him first. There is also a recording by Trio Medieval, a Norwegian Girls’ Choir, giving us three very different but very beautiful versions of the poem.
