MTV is launching their online music/video store with their URGE software beta being released on Wednesday. While this may be considered just another download service, there are a few things they have going for them. For one, MTV is offering the service, and has plenty of unique content they can offer. The other is that it will be the featured music service on Microsoft’s media player.
On the downside, and this is a big one, it is not compatible with Apple’s iPod products. With the iPod a huge market leader, not being able to offer their services to that huge market is a big problem. In time, others may cut into Apple’s lead and open up the download market some more, so this could be a problem that will disappear over time. THe question is, How much time will it take?
Initially, they will only be offering streaming video, downloads will be available at a later date. Music will be offered at the usual $0.99 per song, with an unlimited subscription service available as well for $9.99, $14.95 for the ability to transfer it to compatible portable music player.
Let’s see if they can make a go of it.
