Slim Devices Squeezebox

Yet another device you can use to stream audio files from any network connected PC to your home stereo. This is the third generation of the Squeezebox from Slim Devices, and improves on a number of features that were listed as negatives on previous versions, particularly the size of the display and support for WMA files.

The Squeezebox will allow you to stream a number of digital formats to be played on your home stereo. In addition to digital music files you may have, you can also stream internet radio through it as well. You can even have the device connect directly to the internet to connect to those same internet stations.

The connection to your home network can be done wirelessly or through a wired connection. The device has multiple output options including RCA, headhone and optical/coax digital ouputs. That covers just about every type you may need. Use a web browser or included remote to control the device.

In total, it is a nice looking device that would look at home in your living room. The multiple output options, choice of wired or wireless networking, option to use it as a wireless bridge to add another ethernet connected device and 24 bit DAC all lead to a complete package. Coming in at $249 for a wired device and $299 for the wireless version, it is a bit pricey for accomplishing its single task of streaming music. Still, the technology is there and as these devices gain popularity the prices should come down. For under $100, I would add one of these to my system right now.

I went through some reviews on iNods.com and I must tell you…this Mac baby is yet another wonder. With a free download of Slim Server on their site the setup is zip-zap-zoom..no sweat especially if you are running Mac OS X and iTunes.
