Well, maybe not a billion gagillion, but the figure $1.65 trillion sounds equally as made up.

Sony BMG, EMI, Warner Music Group, Universal Music Group along with Arista Records and Capitol Records have filed suit in federal court seeking $150,000 for each track posted on AllofMP3.com in violation of their copyrights.

If you have been keeping up with the ongoing saga surrounding AllofMP3.com, you know that Russia recently agreed to shut down the site in an effort to get into the WTO. You may also know that AllofMP3 responded with a resounding “bite me.”

While it appears that AllofMP3 will probably continue fighting for their business, they are currently getting slammed from all sides which makes their survival unlikely. Either way, the success of the site proves that record companies need to ditch DRM and find a way to make downloading more affordable. Seriously, how much better are we off at $.99 a song compared with the overpriced CD’s sold in years past?

[…] Illegal under what law, you ask? The one we just got changed. Once the record label’s lawsuit gets underway, I’m sure you will hear elaboration interpretations of U.S. copyright law and how allofMp3 is violating relevant statutes. Under U.S. law, though, legal arguments in support of their position are probably tenuous at best. Knowing this, they bolstered their position prior to filing suit by having trade groups pressure Russia in all sorts of ways to come down on the company. Prior to this agreement, Russian law actually seemed to allow what allofMp3 was doing. With Russia’s cooperation, the record labels finally have more than a glimmer of hope of succeeding. But, the resulting question is: should Russian copyright law be written by U.S. trade groups? […]

[…] The battle brewing between the RIAA, Russia, and the U.S. is getting more interesting by the minute. Here is the latest volley from AllofMP3.com on the $1.65 trillion lawsuit filed against them last week: “AllofMP3 understands that several U.S. record label companies filed a lawsuit against Media Services in New York,” an unnamed “senior company official” stated. “This suit is unjustified as AllofMP3 does not operate in New York. Certainly the labels are free to file any suit they wish, despite knowing full well that AllofMP3 operates legally in Russia. In the mean time, AllofMP3 plans to continue to operate legally and comply with all Russian laws.” […]
