[...] Getting your bike stolen in Philadelphia is something of a rite of passage; I had my first — a sweeeeeeet GT BMX jawn — lifted back in 1984, and there’s been two others since. One was when I unwittingly locked it to a pole that had nothing on the top (the clever thieves merely threw it up into the air, about 20 feet or so, until it came loose from the pole, at which point, even I had to admit that they deserved to keep it) and then I’ve had other, less ambitious thefts, like the time an old landlord refused to call me back after I tried to rescue an old Workman from my old apartment basement. (Et tu, Peter the Landlord?) My point: No one should be surprised that at least of 2007, Philly was the bike-stealing-est city in the U.S. of A. And though the cops may try to deny it and say theft numbers are down, I say hogwash: We should celebrate our status in an effort to educate people how easy it is to have your bike stolen, how much of a perfect crime this is, and what you can do to not get suckered. And with Philly Bike Share on the way, the message could not be more timely: Yo, Philly! Keep an eye on that wheel. UnbreakableBonds: The Top 10 Bike Stealing-est Cities In America Metro: It’s A Not So Bad, It’s A Nice-a Place, Ahh, Shaddapayouface P.S. Seriously, how awesome is that snake bike lock?
