Telenoid R1 is a Telepresence Robot Baby Ghost Thingy

Looking like a cross between a baby and slimer,  this new telepresence android called “Telenoid R1″ can establish presence with movable eyes, mouth, head, and limbs as well as provide months worth of nightmares. The robot’s movements are controlled via software called “FaceAPI”, which tracks the user’s facial expressions and transmits them to the robot.

The robot was designed by Prof. Hiroshi Ishiguro and the researchers at ATR, and was co-developed by ATR with Eager Co. Ltd. The robot measures 80cm (31?), weighs 5kg (11 lbs) and will sell for 3,000,000 JPY apiece, or about $35,000. A less advanced version known as “P1″ will be available for 70,000 JPY, or about $8,000. They are hoping to sell at least 10 “Telenoid R1″ units by October and 100 by the end of next year.
