On Wednesday, FEMA demonstrated an Emergency Alert System that will send emergency alerts to cellphones and websites.

If there is trouble afoot, the system will notify satellite radio and T.V. networks along with wireless phone and web carriers in addition to the traditional local stations.

The Department of Homeland Security expects to have the system fully operational across the U.S. by the end of 2007. However, individuals living in the hurricane prone Gulf states should see this technology implemented in 2006.

There is no word yet on whether the information sent to phones will include that annoying beeping that the FCC loves so much.
