Iris Recognition on Mobile Phones

Japan’s Oki Electric has developed iris recognition technology for mobile phones that are equipped with cameras. In fact, any ordinary camera will work on any phone or PDA so long as Oki’s software is installed.
“Identification accuracy is said to be high, with only 1 in 100,000 scans resulting in error, and the system can tell the difference between flesh-and-blood eyes and photographs.”
The main focus of this technology is to bolster the security of cellphone payment systems, something that is fairly common in Japan, but a completely foreign idea to those of us in the States. But then again, it always seems as if the Japanese are living like the Jetsons over there while we are still rubbing two sticks together to stay warm.
