Verizon To Allow Ads On Mobile Phones

Starting next year, Verizon Wireless will allow banner advertisements to be placed on websites visited by users via their mobile phones.

We know we can make significant dollars in mobile Web advertising in 2007,” said John Harrobin, vice president of marketing and digital media for Verizon Wireless. “That said, we likely will not–we want to take it carefully and methodically, and enable the right experience.” More generally, he added, “Mobile advertising is going to take off in 2007.”

While it remains to be seen just how annoying these ads might become, the move towards mobile advertising was inevitable. Could this be the first step towards the free cellphone service that Google CEO Eric Schmidt envisioned or will Verizon simply keep on charging us for their service in addition to the revenue they receive from the advertising? My guess is the latter. In fact, I’ll bet that we won’t even see a decrease in rates.
