Sony Corporation is planning to introduce a line of Walkman branded phones later this year for the Japanese market. The phones will be offered by KDDI Corporation, second largest telecom operator in Japan. The phones are expected to store up to 500 songs, better than KDDI’s previous offerings.
There is still a belief that people will be interested in the combination cell phone and music player so that you only have to carry one device. Since the cell phone is already on a network and everyone has one, it seems like a marriage of convenience. Sony would obviously like to be the dominant brand in this arena as they were when the Walkman first came out. And if Japan was a hit, they could to take it global.
To date, Apple has eaten their lunch on MP3 players. And to make Sony’s life a bit harder, Apple is reported to be working with Softbank Corporation on an iPod phone. I am sure it will all come down to the features, design and ease of use of the competing devices. And for Sony to beat Aplle at that, they need to bring their A game.
