AMD in Dell Servers

Dell has announced that it plans to have AMD processors in it’s high end servers by year end. There seems to be some shock among the media that Dell would do this, but there are three very simple reasons why. Price, performance and customer demand.

There is no doubt that Intel used it’s influence to keep AMD chips out of the systems of large manufacturers in the past, but the fact is that AMD processors have outperformed Intel in the last year or two and they have done it at very competitive prices. Gamers have gravitated towards AMD for a few years because of the price to performance ratio. So I find it more surprising that Dell has not looked to AMD earlier. Put this together with Dell’s purchase of AlienWare and you can see they now offer an almost complete portfolio fo AMD products, even though they do not currently offer it on their Dell branded desktops.

I think AMD was very restrained to hold off filing suit as long as they did, but even barring a conclusion to that case it appears that AMD has gotten what they always asked for, the right to compete. More power to them.
