Today AMD announced their quad FX platform, consisting of three new processors with Dual Socket Direct Connect (DSDC) Architecture. It’s the first dual-socket, multi-core desktop PC platform designed to take advantage of the latest enhancements in Windows Vista Ultimate.
Pricing for pairs of the new AMD Athlon 64 FX-70, FX-72 and FX-74 dual-core processors is $599, $799 and $999, respectively. AMD expects to release a true quad core chip sometime next year, but they have promised that consumers can simply upgrade their machines by swapping in the new processors when the time comes. For those of you who are counting, that would mean a total of eight processor cores.

The platform is designed for high end users who are into extreme multi-tasking. That is to say, people (like me) who often run numerous demanding programs simultaneously. Seriously, check out my desktop screenshot after the break. When quad cores come to the Mac I’m all over it.
