Just days after the announcement of their Quad FX platform, AMD has rolled out their new dual core Athlon 64 X2 chips. The X2s mark the company’s transition from 90nm to the more energy efficient 65nm process technology – a standard that Intel has been using for over a year.
“AMD processors built with 65nm line-widths are designed to deliver exceptional performance when running multiple applications, as well as enable small form factor PCs that complement both home and office environments. By mid-2007, AMD expects to be fully converted to 65nm production at Fab 36.”
AMD hopes to progress into 45nm by the middle of 2008 with 32nm chips to follow within two years.
Prices for the new processors range from the 2.1GHz 4000+ ($169) to the 2.6GHz 5000+ ($301).
