Choosy Nerds Say “JIF” Not “GIF” [Video]


I bet most of you don’t know that GIF actually stands for Graphics Interchange Format and even more of you don’t know you’ve been saying it wrong. Steve Wilhite, inventor of the GIF, received a Lifetime Achievement Webby Award on Tuesday and gave an acceptance speech in GIF format. The rules say awards speeches can be just five words, so the GIF read “It’s pronounced “JIF” not “GIF.” And with that, the internet blew up into a battle of computer nerds and grammar Nazis the likes of which the world has never before experienced. So, how are you going to say it now that you know?
