After Intel’s recent rebranding effort, it may or may not be surprising that they have decided to officially stick a fork in the Pentium brand name.

According to TG Daily, “Pentium,” unveiled in 1993 for its P5 processor generation, will begin to quietly disappear in the current CPU generation such as the single-core 600 series as well as the D 800 and D 900 families.”

Apparently, Intel will not make a major announcement regarding the decision - they will simply transition into new bland processor names like “Intel D 920.”

Personally, this move seems a little risky to me when you consider that AMD is starting to nip at Intel’s heels. As far as I know, the Pentium brand hadn’t outlived its usefullness - so why drop a well recognized brand at this critical juncture?

Bland processor names get lost in a sea of other products. The Pentiums stood out from the crowd in this respect - which has been a definite advantage for Intel.
