Athlon X2 6000+AMD has upped the clock speed on their X2 series to 3.0 GHz, just beating out Intel’s highest dual core at 2.93 GHz. As everyone is well aware, clock speed is not everything and while the AMD performs fairly well, it is just a step below what Intel’s can do. One of the drawbacks of the AMD is that they are still using their 90 nm technology instead of their newer 65 nm. What this means is that this processor is hungrier for power than it should be, and generates more heat.

AMD still appears to be in a transition period with their manufacturing technologies and this is somewhat of a stopgap. For a processor in the sub $500 range, it is cheaper than Intel’s comparable offering, but that comes at a price - in both processing power and power requirements. If they start utilizing the 65 nm technology and get the clock speeds to the norm for today, then they would have a real winner. For now, if you need a processor and power / noise are not real drawbacks, it may fit your needs.
