Vern, the highly acclaimed and influential movie critic from such websites as Ain’t It Cool News, such blogs as Outlaw Vern, and such books as Seagalogy: A Study of the Ass-Kicking Films of Steven Seagal is back with a new collection of movie musings dubbed Yippee Ki-Yay Moviegoer! Writings on Bruce Willis, Badass Cinema and Other Important Topics.
And Titan books has honored Nerd Approved with a copy so that we may review this book about reviews.
Let me just start this out by saying that, generally speaking, a couldn’t give two shits about individual movie reviews. A large group of moviegoers is one thing, but one dude’s opinion isn’t necessarily this dude’s opinion, so I just go to the theater and see the movies that I’m interested in. Period.
However, you don’t necessarily read Vern to get his opinion. You read Vern because he’s hilarious—and his obsessive, stream of consciousness approach to writing is, in many cases, more entertaining than the film itself. It isn’t for everyone (especially if you are a stickler about grammar), but I definitely dig it.
That having been said, if you are familiar with Vern, you aren’t going to see anything here that you haven’t seen before, save for some chapter intros and the occasional footnote. It is simply a compilation of his work from Ain’t It Cool News and his personal site organized in a fashion that is mostly focused on bad ass cinema (both mainstream and obscure) but, in typical Vern style, drifts onto tangents like Mary Poppins, Enchanted and Garfield. I can only assume that this falls under “other important topics,” even though most would consider Garfield faaaaar from important.
At any rate, I consider Yippee Ki-Yay Moviegoer! to be a must read for movie fans that aren’t familiar with Vern’s body of work. Whether or not you love movies enough to buy it is one thing, but, at the very least, it’s worth thumbing through in the bookstore when you need something to read in the bathroom. Screw those signs outside the door, if they didn’t want me to bring books in the bathroom, they would have restocked the toilet paper.
Chances are though, you will not feel compelled to defile this book. Vern’s enthusiasm will rekindle your love for movies—helping you appreciate the classics and maybe even discover a passion for B-rated flicks.
