If you’ve played Portal and Portal 2 over and over, get excited because you’ll be able to play a tabletop version of the game this fall. The news of Cryptozoic’s game came during Toy Fair, and it’s tentatively titled “Portal: Uncooperative Cake Acquisition Game.” That’s already a good sign. The strategy game will be playable for 2-4 people and has custom playing pieces including “test subjects, sentry turret, weighted companion cube, and delicious cake.” I can tell this board game is going to make me hungry.
The idea to create the tabletop version of the video game about puzzles actually came from Valve. They came up with a prototype and worked on it for about a year before approaching publisher Cryptozoic. They apparently didn’t have to make huge changes and only had “minimal input.” Valve’s Jeep Barnett says the game is its own entity:
“This was designed to stand on its own, not as a promotional tool. While it may appeal more immediately to Portal fans, we tried to create something that was entertaining for everyone who tries it.”
Sounds great because I’m one of the few that hasn’t played the video games.
