I have seen a number of stories recently discussing how ads in video games can lead to a positive impression of a product, particularly if they are embedded into the game. Sort of like the cars of NASCAR being one big advertisement. Not something I am particularly against at this time. Seeing actual products in a game does give it a more realistic feel, but if it gets to the level of being obnoxiously obvious it will get out of hand rather quickly. I am fine with the placement as long as the ads are secondary to the design of the game, but I think we can all see what this could become. Games created purely for the sake of product placement. Let the game designers decide when an ad is appropriate and not let the lure of easy money from advertisers take over the design process. I think the gaming community is would have no place for a game that does not deliver what its true purpose is, and that is exciting game play and interesting scenarios.
