As most of you know, the original America’s Army was a free online game released by the U.S. military as a recruting tool - it was also extremely popular. Therefore, it is not surprising that a sequel will begin development in early 2006.

Here is what we know:

The game will be entitled “America’s Army: Real Heroes” and, as the name implies, you will be able to play as actual decorated soldiers including Sgt. 1st Class Jerry Wolford (pictured above) “who received a Silver Star for a firefight in the southern Iraqi town of Samawah. According to the award citation, Wolford put himself in harm’s way to help the wounded, redistributing weapons and equipment and coordinating fire for the machine guns.” There is talk of including a mission that mirrors Wolford’s actual experience.

In total, there will be nine real soldiers in the game - including a woman that has not yet been identified.

If that wasn’t enough, there will also be a line of action figures based on the soldiers.

Given that the game’s true purpose is to recruit soliders for the dwindling ranks of the U.S. Army, I believe that personalizing characters is a good move. However, this does not change the fact that gamers are a fickle group. It is important that new maps be released on a timely basis - in fact, they may want to reconsider their position on community maps. It may take away from the realism a bit - but allowing the gaming community to get involved with development insures that the game will attract and retain more players.
