Bill Gates Talks Halo 3

Bill GatesThe team over at Engadget had the opportunity to interview Bill Gates during the CES Expo last week, and the conversation yielded some interesting news - not the least of which being the latest word on the Halo 3 release date.

Engadget asked: “Are we going to see Halo 3 launch around the time of the launch of the PS3?

Gates: No, I have to make sure that any speculation I did about that is — it’s up to the team when they want to ship that, and they’re going to take their time to make that a super great product. So even we don’t know when that will come out. That’s one of many games that are just phenomenal that are in the works, but it’s up to the artists to do it when they feel good about it.”

This statement contradicts earlier comments made by Gates in which he said that Halo 3 would go head-to-head against Sony’s launch. While it is best not to pressure Bungie into rushing the game, I still find it hard to believe that Microsoft would not line up something big for the PS3 launch - and what could be bigger than Halo?

The article also gets Gates’ take on the HD DVD vs Blu-Ray dilemma (not to mention the XBox 360 HD DVD), XBox Live news, as well as his opinion on the success / failure of the 360 launch.

[...] Personally, I believe that Microsoft has always planned Halo 3 as a buffer against the release of the PS3 and the Revolution - which are both due out in late 2006. Despite Bill Gates’ comments to the contrary,  the bottom line is that releasing Halo 3 around the time of the PS3 / Revolution launch makes entirely too much sense. If the game made it’s debut during the holiday season of 2007, it would give Sony and Nintendo a year to eat into the XBox 360’s lead. [...]
