European PS3’s To Have Less Backward Compatibility

In another stunning coup for customer relations, Sony has announced that the PS3 consoles that they are going to sell in Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia will have less backward compatibility with PS2 games than those that were sold in the US and Japan. The reason for this switch is a hardware change where compatibility will be done by software rather than the dedicated chip previously used.

Now why would Sony want to do this? The official line from Sony is:

“Rather than concentrate on PS2 backwards compatibility, in the future, company resources will be increasingly focused on developing new games and entertainment features exclusively for PS3,” Sony Computer Entertainment Europe president David Reeves said.

For those of us that are a bit more cynical I would have to guess that they are losing their shirt on the PS3 and are doing whatever they can to get their costs down. Maybe it is just me, but this doesn’t seem like the best move they could make at this point in time.
