Pauline is the token damsel waiting to be rescued in the classic video game Donkey Kong. Mario has to come in and save her from the savage gorilla. But Mike Mika’s three-year-old daughter saw things differently. She wanted to play as Pauline and save Mario’s skin instead. I think we have a Princess Leia in the making!
When Mika explained it wasn’t an option in the game, his daughter seemed sad. So he did what any wonderful father would do – he stayed up late and hacked the game.
Now I’m up at midnight hacking the ROM, replacing Mario with Pauline. I’m using the 2010 NES Donkey Kong ROM. I’ve redrawn Mario’s frames and I swapped the palettes in the ROM. I replaced the M at the top with a P for Pauline.
He even zipped it into a downloadable Pauline patch so anyone can enjoy the modification. Someone give him an award or at least a banana.
Check out the video after the break.
