Gates Plans on Merging XBox Live and Windows Live

Apparently, Microsoft conspiracy theorists have another piece of news to worry about.

“Speaking on the eve of the Xbox 360 launch, Microsoft chairman Bill Gates outlined how Xbox Live would evolve into Windows Live, using Windows Messenger as a conduit. The Xbox team showed limited Live integration with Messenger back at E3 in 2003, and even that limited showing caused something of an outcry.

Gates also stated that the recently revealed Microsoft Points system, currently being deployed on Live as micropayment currency for in-game and game-associated items and content, will be transferred across to Windows Live.”

Let’s not forget that the XBox 360 is essentally a media based PC. Microsoft’s strategy then, is to put a Windows based computer in millions of living rooms around the world. In fact, Windows Live may have been the centerpiece of Microsoft’s console strategy from the begining.

Could it be that the XBox is just a veiled attempt at pushing Windows software deeper into our lives? Are they really interested in winning the console wars or is it all about operating systems?
