The brass over at Nintendo have finally decided on a name for their next generation console - so forget about codename “Revolution” and familiarize yourself with the Nintendo “Wii.”
Choosing the name “Wii” was explained by Nintendo thusly:
- Wii sounds like “we,” which emphasizes this console is for everyone.
- Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii.
- Wii has a distinctive “ii” spelling that symbolizes both the unique controllers and the image of people gathering to play.
- And Wii, as a name and a console, brings something revolutionary to the world of video games that sets it apart from the crowd.
“So that’s Wii. But now Nintendo needs you.”
“Because, it’s really not about you or me. It’s about Wii.”
Personally, I’m not sure how to feel about the name. It didn’t strike me in a positive way right off the bat. In fact , it doesn’t seem to fit the image I have of the console.
I guess it will just have to grow on me.

Thats just plain stupid.
Yeah, they should have stuck with the name “Revolution” to be perfectly honest. Wii is “too cute” and serious gamers in the U.S. don’t buy cute. We buy games with guns - and if possible, we would like those guns to shoot chainsaws. In other words, masculinity is key.
The name also gives off this vibe that the console is small in comparision to the PS3 and the 360.
Still, the U.S. market is only one piece of the pie.
