Hidden ‘Mortal Kombat’ Arcade Menus Discovered After Over 20 Years [Video]

Mortal Kombat is a game series known for its secrets. Some of them – such as hidden characters like Reptile, Jade and Noob Saibot – were real. Others, like the red ninja Ermac weren’t, but achieved such mythic status that the developers actually put them into later installments of the game.

Now, just when we thought there was nothing else left to discover, YouTube channel YourMKArcadeSource has revealed hidden menus within the first three Mortal Kombat games that were personally programmed by Mortal Kombat creator Ed J Boon. We know, we’re just as shocked as you are.

Through the carefully-choreographed entry of the player 1 and 2 block buttons, you can reveal the hidden “EJB” menus in MKMK II, MK3 and Ultimate MK3 from the game’s Attract Mode (i.e. the demonstration gubbins that appears on the screen when nobody is currently playing it). The hidden menu allows you to see character endings, run diagnostics and, in MK3, view every character’s Fatality as well as play the tough-as-nails Galaga clone that can usually only be played by finishing a tournament on the system.

You can watch video of the reveal below. Fair warning: The video contains mid-90s video game violence, which according to Bill Clinton can and will turn you into a murderous psychopath with little or no empathy.
