IPlaystation 3s the U.S. far behind?

Sony Computer Entertainment President Ken Kutaragi announced today at the Tokyo Game Show that the 20GB PS3 would be reduced to about 47,600 yen ($410), from an originally planned 59,800 yen ($515). This would put the console in a better position against Microsoft and their basic XBox 360 / HD-DVD combo that will sell for 49,600 yen ($427).

There has been no word yet on whether or not the higher end model would receive a similar cut, or whether or not the discount would be duplicated in other markets.

The price drop was made in response to consumer complaints about the console being too expensive. Hopefully, Sony will come to their senses and deliver price drops across the board – because if they don’t, the PS3 will likely die a terrible death in the West.

Update: In addition to the price drop, the 20GB PS3 will also feature a HDMI port. That makes for a relatively cheap HD movie experience.
