When the PS3 finally does ship, it has been reported by Yahoo that Sony confirmed that it will ship with a 60GB HDD standard, upgradeable if preferred.
Sony’s president of Computer Entertainment, Ken Kutaragi, announced on Wednesday that all PS3 games are being developed to take advantage of the 60GB HDD. Another essential use for the HDD will be Sony’s online service, which will offer downloads in a similar way to Microsoft’s Xbox Live platform.
It is not clear when they say “upgradeable” whether that means you need to buy the system with the 60 GB DD and then change it out or if you can purchase different packages with different size HDD’s included. Preferably the latter.
It does seem the wise thing to do, it is really beyond my comprehension why Microsoft did not ship an HDD with every Xbox 360. Having the HDD opens up a lot more possibilities in terms of what developers can do and what services are available.
