Final Fantasy XIIThe PS2 may be on its last legs, but it appears that that FFXII will be taking it out with a bang.

Reviews:

IGN: (9.5 out of 10) “Final Fantasy XII is a fantastic RPG. It blows all of its PS2 competition this year right out of the water and is among the all time elite role-players ever made for the system. Kingdom Hearts, Devil Summoner, Xenosaga III, Tales of the Abyss… none of them are on the same level as Square Enix’s bold and riveting move in a new direction. Whether you’re a fan of the genre or not, FF12 most certainly deserves a special spot on your PS2 game shelf… put it in the front.”

Gamespot: (9.0 out of 10)“Final Fantasy XII has been a long time coming, and it shows. Thankfully, all the time in development hasn’t dampened the quality of the game’s presentation, and in spite of however many hundreds of people must have worked on this game for all these years, the end result is a more cohesive game than its predecessors from the series’ 3D-graphics era.”

Yahoo Games: (4.5 out of 10)“Final Fantasy’s new, seamless approach to exploration and combat works beautifully, and comes with all the depth of plot, character, and gameplay that we’ve come to expect from the name. Our only reservations are that at times it requires a little more patience than it should, and that the music is a touch bland. Final Fantasy XII’s PlayStation 2 swan song is one of the series’ best.”

EuroGamer: (10 out of 10) “It’s not hard to see us looking back in five years time and seeing FFXII as a pivotal, changing moment in how RPGs are designed; a game which drew on the experience of Final Fantasy’s branches into tactical strategy and massively multiplayer, as well as on the more mature storytelling of other mediums, and folded it back into the number series, to wonderful result. Fans will, of course, debate the merits of Final Fantasy XII for a long time – but our own experience with this game fully justifies giving it the highest accolade we can award.”

Nerd ApprovedBottom Line: It’s not often that you get a game (let alone an 11th sequel) that lives up to the hype. It’s even less likely that it surpasses those expectations. Believe it or not, Final Fantasy XII has done just that.

Even if you are planning on upgrading your console this holiday season, it is worth picking up FFXII for one last go around with the PS2.
