Microsoft has always been very careful with how they discussed backwards compatibility for the Xbox360 running Xbox games. They have used phrases like “At launch, Xbox 360 will be backward compatible with the top Xbox games”. They have made some games compatible, but have done no more work on it since the beginning of the year.
Now, they are considering not doing any more work on it. Corporate VP of Microsoft’s interactive entertainment business and entertainment and devices division Peter Moore says that Microsoft has “under promised and over delivered.” I am not sure how many people who bought 360’s would agree with that. They seem to feel that people buying a new system do so because they want to play the new games, and have no interest in the old games any more. And that could not be further from the truth. No one wants to toss their old games or have to support two systems.
Time to see how Microsoft is going to handle the inevitable backlash from their customers. I, for one, think they under-promised and under-delivered. Backwards compatibility should be a given, if you start designing with that in mind. They obviously did not, I guess they want to hand the console wars over to Nintendo if that is the manner in which they are going to treat us. People have long memories about things like this.
