First it was the spyware issue, now we have learned that the v1.01 patch for Battlefield 2142 requires users to uninstall an important Windows patch that’s designed to protect the Windows Kernel.
In other words, EA is forcing users to leave their computers open to hackers.
Here is an excerpt directly from the v1.01 patch ReadMe file:
“Players who have the Windows security update KB917422 installed may suffer from an application error when running Battlefield 2142. This error can be solved by uninstalling the KB917422 update.”
And just what does KB917422 do? Check out the official Microsoft patch overview:
“A security issue has been identified in the Windows Kernel that could allow an attacker to compromise your Windows-based system and gain control over it. You can help protect your computer by installing this update from Microsoft. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer.”
Now, my question is – why the hell didn’t EA fix this? I mean, we are talking about a patch here. Did EA just rush another game out with major flaws?
Many may argue that these issues are petty or irrelevant, but in my opinion this sort of thing is indicative of a serious quality issue at EA. The bottom line is that they have been cranking out some half-assed stuff recently – yet people continue to buy their products.
