Once again, it seems that if you gold plate something, people are willing to pay ridiculous amounts of money for it.
Take the $3500 USB Key for instance (or perhaps the $14000 gold plated Voodoo PC.)
The device is made by a company called Whitle Lake, and it features five polished diamonds in addition to the gold plating. Storage sizes include 128MB, 256MB, 512MB and 1024MB – not that anyone really cares.
“This product will open new markets for us,” said White Lake owner Rob van Berkom, in a statement. “We have sold huge amounts of personalized USB stick with logos over the past year. Our customers used them as a give-away. Some of them asked us for a more exclusive product line. This stick meets their demand, so we expect to sell quite a few of them.”
So what is more important, style or functionality? The debate continues.
