It seems that Google is preparing to go head to head with Microsoft in the world of computer software.
The OS will be a variation “of the increasingly popular Ubuntu desktop Linux distribution, based on Debian and the Gnome desktop, it is known internally as ‘Goobuntu’.”
Apparently, Google has confirmed this information. However, there is no word yet as to exactly what the software will be used for. It could be an internal application, or it could be distributed freely to the public.
‘The Register’ was quick to point out that this seems to be the direction that Google was headed in. After all they have taken an interest in desktop applications recently with the release of the Google Pack.

Update: Apparently the OS will be for internal use only. Check out this Nerd Approved article for more information.
