Apple’s OSX Phoning Home?

Historically speaking, Apple has not been overly concerned about software piracy – that’s AppleMicrosoft’s turf. However, the latest OSX update has raised questions about whether or not Apple’s stance is changing.

Simply put, the update sends information about the users computer back to Apple. The company claims that the information is being used to determine whether or not desktop widgets are up to date. However, analysis has determined that the system phones home as much as twice every 7 hours.

As far as I’m concerned, checking in once every couple of days would be sufficent to keep widgets up to date.

At this point, no one is really sure whether or not Apple is up to anything shady – however, the recent lockdown of the OSX kernel source for Intel Macs proves that Apple has acted more and more like Microsoft as their popularity has increased.
