UPDATE: Microsoft has sent a cease and desist letter to VistaTorrent. I take back my comment about Microsoft, “To their credit, to this point they have not asked that the site be taken down.”
Trying to assist all those that are trying to get the Vista Beta 2, Chris Pirillo has published the 3.2 GB package of the Beta 2 package using BitTorrent. Many people have had trouble getting the download directly from Microsoft, timing out and excruciatingly slow downloads. And while this seems to be a better way to get the software, Microsoft does recommend against getting the software from a third party. Of course, a little CYA never hurts.
While Mr. Pirillo and Jake Ludington have set up VistaTorrent.com to help those users, for their part Microsoft suggests users place and order for the DVD rather than fight the download issue. Thanks, Microsoft.
To their credit, to this point they have not asked that the site be taken down. And while Microsoft claims that to open the pipe too wide would cause internet issues around the world, BitTorrent is a much more efficient means for distribution. I guess if it wasn’t developed by Microsoft, they don’t want to give it any publicity. Too bad for them and, more importantly, their users.
