Sony Pictures has set a $17.95 price tag for the new Blu-ray disks that will debut in American stores later this year. According to Reuters, that is about the same price that retailers were charging for new format DVD’s in 1997.
On the other hand, new release Blu-ray disks will set you back about $23.45 – or about 15-20% more than retailers were charging for new theatrical DVD releases back in the day.
Naturally, Benjamin Feingold, president of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment believes that the new disks will be a hot product – but I’m not so sure. At around $1800, the first Blu-ray players are going to be for the earliest of early adopters.
