Blu Ray: Lack of Porn Could Kill It

Island Fever 3Digital Playground has announced that they have four adult features coming out in high definition this month. What is surprising is that they are releasing them in the HD DVD format. Surprising because they announced last year that they would be releasing their high definition releases in the Blu Ray format.

Why this sudden change? According to Digital Playground’s founder, the Blu Ray manufacturers would not have anything to do with it because Sony does not allow triple X features to be released using their format.

This makes no sense for Sony at all. No one is going to associate the developer of a particular media with the content that is on it. Why should Sony care what their media is used for? It would be like Seagate not selling hard drives to someone who may use them to store adult content. Moreover, to this point the format war has been a stalemate. This could be the tie breaker. Time will tell, but this does not bode well for Sony or their Blu Ray technology.

Maybe this is just some sort of misunderstanding, because there is no way Sony makes this mistake. Right?

My co-workers and I are amazed at Sony’s track record of making serious market errors: Beta, MP3 players, and now THIS.

While we agree that you should take a stand on porn as much as you can, but to say your technology cannot be used for a certain market is just irrisponsible to the shareholders.

I wholeheartedly agree that the developers of technology are not associated with the end uses or end-users of the technology in over 95% of the cases. (maybe Tasers are an exception)

Personally, I think Sony is a little to cocky for their own good. They don’t give consumers enough credit. We won’t buy whatever they put on the shelves and we wont fall for their absurd viral marketing campaigns.
