LG plans to show their high definition DVD player that supports both HD DVD and Blu Ray at CES next week. While it has been rumored off and on that they were working on this, this throws a wrench into the format war.
If more companies come out with dual format players, which format should content companies provide? It would be a waste to manufacture both, but either one you support leaves people who own players that only support one format out in the cold.
The only thought that comes to mind when I think about this is, damn those competing formats! I would have been first in line for a high definition player if it wasn’t for that. The simple solution for me would be to get the HD DVD for the Xbox360, but I still have no desire to spend even a couple hundred bucks on something that could become obsolete in a short time.
This could be a non-issue in the high definition space if they can’t sell it for an affordable price. If they are selling these things for $1000+ and are unable to get the price way down in a reasonable amount of time, then I will just have to wait even longer to determine what I should get.
We should get information on pricing and availability next week.
