A new freeware plugin called Perian will allow users to play almost any video codec in Quicktime (except WMV of course – but you can take care of that with Flip4Mac).
A complete list of additional codecs playable through Perian are as follows:
- Divx, XviD, FLV, AVI, MS-MPEG4 v1, MS-MPEG4 v2, MS-MPEG4 v3, DivX 3.11 alpha, 3ivX, Sorenson H.263, Flash Screen Video, Truemotion VP6,
- These formats when they are inside an AVI:
h.264, mpeg4, AAC, AC3 Audio, and VBR MP3
I have to admit, as a Mac user, it is nice to consolidate all of these codecs under Quicktime. It definitely makes things a lot easier.
