Kurt Shintaku has posted a very short tutorial on setting up a USB key as an install device for Microsoft Vista. As he points out using a USB 2.0 device to do this has one advantage: it is very fast. He uses a fast 4 GB drive to accomplish it.
So if minimal downtime is important, or you load a lot of machines, this is a simple method. I would say it is useful for any machine that does not have a DVD drive, but if you have the hardware to run Vista, I would think you could afford one. What I really wan tot know is, Why doesn’t Microsoft offer this as an option? I might be interested in spending a few extra bucks to get a USB drive preloaded as an install device rather than a DVD.
