Scientists at the Tokyo Institute of Technology have developed a device that can analyze smells, record the odor’s recipe, and then reproduce the scent using a blend of up to 96 chemicals.
“Creator Takamichi Nakamoto says the technology will have applications in food and fragrance industries where companies want to replicate odors. But it could also be a boon for the digital world, allowing smells can be recorded in one place — by sensors in a mobile phone, for instance — and transmitted to appreciative noses halfway around the world.”
Measuring 1 meter by 3 feet by 2 feet, the device is a little too large to be truly portable – but Nakamoto is confident that it can be scaled down and commercialized sometime in the near future.
It appears that the ability to experience something at a distance with all 5 senses is not as far off as one might think.
