Hellboy creator Mike Mignola has announced that an R-rated Hellboy movie reboot is in the works with director Neil Marshall (The Descent, Game Of Thrones) and David Harbour (Stranger Things) in the lead. What the hell?
Don’t get me wrong, I would love to see more Hellboy on the big screen. I’m just disappointed that we aren’t getting closure on the Guillermo del Toro / Ron Perlman trilogy. Granted, del Toro spent a lot of time teasing the possibility of a third installment, but it clearly wasn’t a top priority. Plus, Perlman is pushing 70 now, so the window to make it happen has likely closed. I also worry that this is a knee-jerk reaction to the recent success of R-rated superhero films.
Still, I’m inclined to look at this as a positive thing. Again, I would love to see more Hellboy films and I think that David Harbour is a decent choice for the lead. Let’s not forget that he was in the final mix for the Cable role, so it seems clear that Hollywood is keen on getting him involved in some bigger projects.
