High Definition DVD Breakthrough

In a development that could turn the high definition DVD format war into simply a choice of technology, New Medium Enterprises say they have developed a process to create mulitple layer DVD’s without the low yields that have been a problem to this point. What this means is that movie studios can now put their movies onto a single high definition DVD in both Blu Ray and HD DVD format at a reasonable cost.

Nobody has been happy about this format war, all it does is stifle the market and consumer acceptance. Now, it won’t matter what format you choose, movies can be sold that support both. What you will end up with is now a technology war, consumer’s can choose whichever technology they think is superior and movie titles should be available. I say “should” because it will obviously add some cost to support both formats. If at some point one technology has the bulk of the market, movie studios may find it more economical to only support the apparent winner at that point. So while there is still not a perfectly safe choice, it appears it could get a lot better.
