ICANN Rejects .XXX Domain

ICANNICANN has officially rejected the .xxx domain name that was intended for voluntary use by the adult entertainment industry. This decision is a complete reversal of the preliminary approval that was handed down last June.

According to CNN, ICANN’s CEO Paul Tworney remarked that “the decision largely came down to whether the creation of “xxx” might put ICANN in a difficult position of having to enforce all of the world’s laws governing pornography, including ones that might require porn sites to use the domain. Speech-related laws, he noted, often conflict with one another.”

The news comes as a relief to some conservative groups that felt that a new name would make porn more accessable to the masses because they could register under both .com and .xxx domains.

Pornographers were also concerned that a .xxx domain would pave the way for the government to infringe on their free speech rights.

Finally, conservatives and pornographers have come together on some common ground. A touching moment for sure.
