Battery recalls, disappointing earnings, and the fall to number 2 in the computer industry behind HP has prompted Dell Founder and Chairman Michael Dell to return to the CEO position he vacated in 2004.
The move, which is effective immediately, ousts Kevin Rollins, the man Michael Dell hand picked to be his successor.
“Kevin has been a great business partner and friend,” Dell said in a statement. “He has made significant contributions to our business over the past 10 years. I wish him much success in the future.”
Will Dell’s return to the helm of the company he founded help to turn it around? Possibly - but he will be facing a much different competitive landscape than he did in 2004. Consumers have come to realize that Dell’s computers are overpriced, underpowered, and backed by some of the lamest customer service imaginable. They won’t be easily fooled this time around.
