More Movies Burned to DVD Allowed

The DVD Copy Control Association has made a step in the right direction by allowing for more choices in burning DVD’s for consumer use. To this point the only way for DVD’s to be burned was in a factory setting. By using special discs that have the Content Scrambling System (CSS) included, they are looking to license companies like MovieLink for burning movies onto DVD’s. This could also open the door for kiosks to be set up that would allow a consumer to choose a a movie and have it burned on the spot.

I think the movie companies are coming to the same conclusion that all the DRM foes have been pushing, and that is that their market is not growing as they would hope and it is because consumers do not see the value in the product the movie companies have been pushing. As those restrictions are relaxed, more people see value in the product. As the perceived value increases and the cost stays the same, their market should increase. And if that happens, I would hope to see the music industry follow the same path to increasing their market and satisfying their consumers needs at the same time.
