NetFlix May Develop Set Top Box

In a widely reported story from Variety, a NetFlix VP indicated that NetFlix was looking to use a set top box with a broadband connection to allo users to download requested movies overnight using the same subscription type service they do today.
NetFlix has sort of backed away from that, as this story in HackingNetflix.com notes. They say that while a set top box is an option, they have not narrowed their approach to only that of sending downloads to a set top box. Obviously there is more to their carefully parsed language than can be discerned, but there is obviously a reason they do not want to have people think that the broadband set top box is their final answer. They plan to announce more in the fourth quarter, and maybe there is some sort of partnering possibility that they don’t want to discount at this point.
In any case, I think the idea is on the right track. No more DVD’s need to be sent, which means no more possibility of receiving a bad disk, though any type of software glitch would result in the same effect. And while overnight delivery is not always as convenient as on demand, it is still better than what we have today.
