Toyota is developing a system for its vehicles that will shut down in the event that a drunk driver is behind the wheel.
The car is able to make this assessment through steering wheel sensors that can detect high levels of alcohol in the bloodstream and / or abnormal steering patterns. A special camera that is installed in the vehicle can also determine if the drivers pupils are not in focus. If the vehicle decides that the driver is under the influence, it will slow to a halt.
The company plans on fitting cars with the system by the end of 2009, and if it works it could be a viable alternative to court-ordered breathalyzer ignition locks.
